House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Wednesday rejected two Republican picks to join the select committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol invasion by a mob of former President Donald Trump’s supporters.
Pelosi in a statement said that she had to reject GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, “with respect for the integrity of the investigation” and “with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members.”
Jordan and Banks were two of the five Republican lawmakers picked for the committee by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Pelosi’s statement said she told McCarthy she would appoint the other three Republicans, and “requested that he recommend two other Members” to replace Jordan and Banks.
When asked at the Capitol why she rejected the two Republicans, Pelosi told NBC News, “January 6th.”
McCarthy had selected Banks to serve as the top Republican on the 13-member panel
McCarthy’s other picks included Reps. Rodney Davis of Illinois, Kelley Armstrong of North Dakota and Texas freshman Troy Nehls.
