Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Legendary TV Talk Show Host Dick Cavett.

Dick Cavett is not only a legendary television personality, talk show host and author. He is the reason Harvey Brownstone wanted to be an interviewer – he’s Harvey’s inspiration,  role model and American Idol.

From 1968 to 2007, on a variety of TV networks and in different formats, our guest hosted one of the world’s most popular TV talk shows. With his keen intellect and unique wit, he set the bar for intelligent, sophisticated conversation with the world’s greatest legendary stars. He was known as “the thinking man’s talk show host”, and his show offered a forum for controversial opinions and issues ranging from feminism, domestic and international affairs, to the Vietnam war.

The Dick Cavett Show became a home away from home for the top stars from the world of movies, television and sports. And of course, through him, we got to know the greatest comedy legends of all time.

Dick Cavett has written a number of bestselling books, starting in 1974 with “Cavett”, followed by “Eye on Cavett” in 1983. And then he released “Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets”, which is a fascinating collection of essays written by Dick Cavett for the New York Times when he had a popular online column. And most recently, he released “Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic Moments, and Assorted Hijinks”, in which he introduces us to the fascinating and iconic characters who have crossed his path over the years – everyone from Stan Laurel and Elizabeth Taylor to Muhammed Ali and James Gandolfini.

Over the years Dick Cavett has had many extraordinary moments. He’s hosted Saturday Night Live. He’s made cameo appearances in “Cheers”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3”, “Beetlejuice”, “Forrest Gump” and “Apollo 13”. He’s done voiceover work on “The Simpsons”. On Broadway, he appeared in “Otherwise Engaged”, and he was the narrator in “Into the Woods” and in the Broadway revival of “The Rocky Horror Show”. And every fan of the legendary pop group ABBA knows about his highly memorable interview with the entire group for his 1981 TV special, “Dick Cavett Meets ABBA.”

Throughout his illustrious career Dick Cavett has earned 9 Emmy Award nominations and won 2 Emmy Awards, along with a Cable Ace Award. He was also nominated for 6 Photoplay Awards for Favorite Variety Star, and in 2016 he won the Spirit of Katharine Hepburn Award.

Harvey Brownstone is a retired judge of the Ontario Court of Justice and was the first openly gay judge in Canada. He is also the bestselling author of “Tug of War: A Judge’s Verdict on Separation, Custody Battles and the Bitter Realities of Family Court” and hosted “Family Matters with Justice Harvey Brownstone,” a television talk show on matters involving the family justice system.

After a distinguished legal career, Harvey was appointed a judge at the age of 38 in 1995.  He has presided in family and criminal courts.   He has been a trailblazer in several ways.  He was the first openly gay judge in Canada.  He was the first sitting judge in the world to write a national best seller and to host a TV talk show.

Harvey has been a role model and icon in the LGBTQ community.  When same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2003, he was the only judge to make himself publicly available to officiate at weddings for lesbian and gay couples travelling to Toronto from all over the world to get married.  In 2007, he officiated at the wedding of Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer, the American couple whose marriage triggered the 2013 United States Supreme Court decision overturning the definition of “spouse” in the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

In February 2021, Harvey launched his online talk show “Harvey Brownstone Interviews” on his own YouTube channel. He saw this as an interesting hobby.   Within several months, the show attracted hundreds of thousands – and then eventually, millions – of viewers.  Because of the overwhelming success of the show, Harvey decided to retire from the judiciary on December 31, 2021 after having presided as a full-time judge for 26 1/2 years.  Free from the constraints imposed upon judges regarding the expression of opinions and the endorsement of private enterprise, Harvey now happily devotes his full-time attention to hosting “Harvey Brownstone Interviews” as a regular member of the public – albeit one with a rather illustrious and unique career history.
