Good Times actor John Amos died on August 21, but news of his death wasn’t made public until six weeks later on October 1. His daughter, Shannon Amos, has now revealed that she learned of her father’s death in the media along with the rest of the world and is “left with many questions.”
Shannon previously made headlines for claiming that her father was a victim of “elder abuse and financial exploitation” prior to being hospitalized in May 2023. The claim was made in a GoFundMe page she set up for her dad, in which she also said he was “fighting for his life in the ICU.”Amos himself spoke out afterwards and refuted Shannon’s claims.
Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher “KC” Amos, announced the actor’s death on October 1 in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He reportedly died of natural causes. There was no explanation for the six-week gap between Amos’ death and the reporting of it in the news media. The actor was 84.
Shannon reacted to her father’s death in an Instagram post on October 1 (see below). “I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she said. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.”
The Instagram post was a video of Shannon dancing with her dad with the Luther Vandross song “Dance With my Father” playing. It’s not noted when the video was taken, but it seems to be from recent years.
“This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing,” her caption continued. “Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free. My family and I deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, calls, and texts. Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.”
There has been a public rift in the Amos family since 2023. Shannon called Adult Protective Services this spring and claimed that K.C. removed Amos from a medical facility against doctors’ advice. Shannon also said she and her family had not had contact with Amos since July 2023. The APS call resulted in a Los Angeles Police Department investigation, which was closed in April after they found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Amos released a statement after the investigation.
“I want to first of all thank the LAPD for their professionalism and thoroughness in their investigation in which they concluded that I am doing well,” he said at the time, per People. “This is the same thing I have been saying all along in my response to the media.”
“I want to thank my fans for their kind words to me in support of my movement everywhere I travel,” the Roots alum continued. “Furthermore, I am even more determined to complete production on the documentary film that my son and I are producing. It will shed light on the real truth as to the motives of those who have painted a false narrative about me.”
Amos had reportedly recently been cast in the upcoming Suits spinoff, Suits LA.
