“Good morning, Las Vegas!”
Jonathan Van Ness and the Fab Five are back for Queer Eye season nine — for the most part. Following Bobby Berk’s exit at the end of season eight, interior designer Jeremiah Brent has joined the group for the upcoming installment.
“The world is changing. We’ve grown and changed, even our cast has changed,” Karamo Brown says at the beginning of the minute-and-a-half trailer. “Girl, have you seen Jeremiah? She got the design skills, honey.”
Season nine sees the Fab Five take their talents to Las Vegas and work with people who are looking for a change in their lives.
“Nine times the charm! This season, Queer Eye brings its transformative magic to the iconic city of Las Vegas, where the Fab Five, now joined by interior designer Jeremiah Brent, meet a fresh group of individuals ready for a life-changing experience,” the logline reads. “From a former showgirl struggling to regain her confidence to a dedicated librarian in need of a change, watch as the Fab Five light up Sin City and transform the lives of their heroes in spectacular Vegas style.”
Each member of the group has a different area of expertise. Tan France serves as the Fab Five’s fashion consultant; Brown is the culture and lifestyle coach; Antoni Porowski is the food and wine guru; and Van Ness specializes in beauty.
The newest season follows Berk’s exit and a Rolling Stone exposé published earlier this year that claimed Van Ness had “rage issues.” It noted that tension among the group is what led to the designer’s departure from the show.
The report cited conversations with three sources, who had worked with the grooming and beauty expert, and described them as “abusive” and a “monster.” The story also claimed that the environment on the set of the reality show was “really toxic.”
Van Ness, who uses they/them pronouns, said the article was not “really based in reality but can certainly have a lot of things taken out of context to make you look as bad as possible.” When speaking about how social media users reacted, the beauty expert noted they felt “a lot of people were looking for a reason to hate me.”
While Berk told Vanity Fair leaving Queer Eye was his choice, France said in an Instagram post in March that the designer was fired, but it had nothing to do with him trying to get his friend, Brent, hired.
“I didn’t prop my friend up for the job,” he said in the video. “They ended up getting it because they were the best person for the job. Am I so happy that they have the job? Uh-huh! I really am, I think they’re going to be incredible on the show. But I didn’t get them hired by getting rid of somebody else.”
