The reunion is on.

A sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is moving ahead at 20th Century Studios, with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in negotiations to reprise their starring roles. The pair will also serve as executive producers.

Tim Federle, who wrote and directed the Disney+ original movie Better Nate Than Never and who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, will direct the feature, which is eyeing a June start date. Sources say the studio is looking to possibly shoot in Los Angeles, but nothing has been set.

Robin Schiff, who wrote the original and is known for showrunning the Neflix hit Emily in Paris, returned to pen the sequel. Laurence Marks, the veteran producer who produced the original, is also back in same role. Barry Kemp, the creator of 1980s series Newhart, is also producing.

The original, released in 1997, was made by Disney’s now-dormant Touchstones Pictures banner, thus the migration to the studio’s 20th Century arm isn’t that far a journey.

The movie featured Sorvino and Kudrow as a pair of unaccomplished, 29-year olds who decide to fabricate successful careers in order to impress their former classmates at their 10th anniversary high school reunion. The fashion, the comedy, and the music contributed to the movie becoming a cult hit and being fondly remembered by members of a certain generation.

Sorvino, who won an Oscar for her performance in Mighty Aphrodite just two years before Romy and Michele, recently starred with Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear in Starz’s supernatural series Shining Vale. She also appeared in Ryan Murphy’s recent mini-series Impeachment: American Crime Story and Hollywood. She is repped by IAG and Circle Management.

Kudrow, who made the original film as one of her summer hiatus projects from Friends, recently appeared on the Time Bandits TV series and starred with Ray Romano in the Netflix series No Good Deed. Kudrow is repped by CAA.

Federle, who also authored the book on which Better Nate is based, is repped by CAA, Magnet Management, and Jackoway Austen while Schiff is repped by WME.
