Katy Perry is now on the receiving end of criticism.
Perry was a judge on American Idol for seven seasons, and during that time, she had to give feedback to contestants — good or bad. One of her former contestants, Steven James, posted a video on social media dissing the singer’s song, “OK.”
“This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol 5 years ago,” he wrote over the TikTok while he listened to the song with a grin on his face and looked side to side.
The comment section was filled with more harsh opinions, which included, “Katy, this is not OK,” “What in the PBS Kids is happening here” and “This is not the same Katy Perry that made the one that got away.”
The “California Gurls” singer left American Idol earlier this year and released her sixth studio album in September — however, it hasn’t been well received. On Dec. 20, she released a deluxe edition, which added four more songs, one of them being “OK.”
The Hollywood Reporter included Perry in this year’s list of Hollywood’s biggest winners and losers as an artist who “lost” 2024 in entertainment. “All aboard the pop girl summer party bus — not so fast, Katy Perry. Like a Kevin Costner of music, Perry quit her American Idol day job … to launch a comeback album that some mused must have been made by AI.”
It continued, “The album was titled 143 — which might as well have been its position on the Billboard chart for all the blowback she got … Lead single ‘Woman’s World’ was an extremely on-the-nose feminism anthem in every respect, except for that choice of Dr. Luke as producer. Look, this doesn’t feel great. We’re rooting for her “dance party tour” next year to be a success (as well as her next comeback album).”
