Daft Punk are marking February 22, the anniversary of their breakup, with a stream of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. The screening of the animated sci-fi movie, which they released in 2003 to accompany Discovery, starts at 5:22 p.m. Eastern on Twitch. Check it out here.
Daft Punk wrote Interstella 5555 with Cédric Hervet and enlisted Kazuhisa Takenouchi, a Dragon Ball Z alumnus, to direct. It tells the story of the duo’s abduction by alien militants and a rescue attempt by a dreamy space pilot called Shep. The hourlong film is usually hard to watch through official channels in North America, though it was excerpted for the album’s videos.
February 22 has become a notable date in Daft Punk’s post-breakup calendar. On the first anniversary of the breakup, they announced a Homework reissue and livestreamed a vintage show. The following year brought news of the Random Access Memories reissue. (Later in 2023, for reasons known to them alone, Daft Punk released a drumless version of the album.)
