Denise Welch has confirmed the news of son Matty Healy‘s engagement to model Gabbriette Bechtel.

Recently, Bechtel posted an Instagram story sparking rumours of her engagement to The 1975 frontman, where she shared the news whilst at a Charli XCX show in New York City. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” she wrote in the story, posting a follow-up mirror selfie wearing the ring.

Now, Healy’s mother Denise Welch has confirmed the news to The Mirror. According to People, the two have been dating since September 2023.

Speaking to The Mirror, Welch said: “I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged. They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York. I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram. Instagram official, he has got engaged to Gabbriette. Black diamond, he had it made for her and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

“She is from Los Angeles, she is absolutely gorgeous, she does have a rat. We couldn’t be happier, she is everything that I would want in a daughter in law.”

Alongside being a model, Gabbriette was the frontwoman for Charli XCX’s punk band Nasty Cherry, whose rise to fame was featured in the reality series called I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry. The band eventually split up during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The news of a potential engagement also comes following Healy’s past relationship with Taylor Swift making headlines following the release of the latter’s latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ – which features multiple nods to their relationship.

While unconfirmed, it is strongly believed that Healy is the subject of several songs on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, namely its title track and ‘The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived’. Swift also mentioned the cult Scottish indie band The Blue Nile on ‘Guilty As Sin?’, which appears to be another nod to Healy.

It is estimated Swift and Healy were involved with each other from April to June 2023, just after she split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

In other Healy news, the singer recently opened up again about his thoughts on Swift’s new album, and said that he was left “blindsided” by how much of the project was supposedly inspired by their relationship, particularly because they were “never serious”.
