One of Chicago’s most popular on air radio DJ’s, DJ VG is about to release her new super hit “El Beso.” Already a phenomena on the radio, DJ VG is about to become a household name, not only in Chicago but all over the planet. She’s vibrant, vivacious and sparkles with personality and talent…..she is embedded with positivity and by just speaking to her for moments it is easy to see she is authentic.
I shared questions and answers with her regarding her career, her love for music and her new single “El Beso.”
What first inspired you to love music and find a career in radio?
Well, music was easy. Growing up there was always music playing at home. My mother played everything from Mo-town, Sha-Na-Na, The Doobie Brothers to Merengue and cumbia’s. Radio on the other hand found me. I was 14 years old when I heard a commercial on 90.5FM. They were offering radio classes and my friends and I thought it would be fun to try out and here we are, the rest is history lol.
What is your favorite part of being a DJ?
My favorite part of being an on-air DJ is being able to go on the mic and bring positivity in someone’s life whether it be through information or music.
After being exposed to all that music…what are your own personal musical influences ?
Ooh that’s a tough one, I listen to all styles of music. I guess depending on what I’m feeling at that moment is what I’ll reach for or what I’m working on.
Do you recall a moment that changed the entire trajectory of your life?
Yes! I was in high school and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life. I began testing different career paths and then one day I was out with my friends going to the mall and we heard on the radio classes were being offered in broadcasting at a local radio station 90.5FM and as I mentioned earlier my friends and I thought it would be fun to try out. When I opened up the MIC for the first time it was a feeling like I never felt before, and I knew then that’s what I was going to do for the rest of my life.
What drives you?
I wake up with an incredible desire to keep reaching, pushing and striving.
That can only be explained through our lord and savior. He drives me.
As a radio DJ you have a lot of influence especially toward your listeners, if you could give the world a message what would it be?
My message is simple, live and let live. So, laugh as much as you can, dance as much as you can and love as much as you can.
You have a new hit record brewing… What was your inspiration and what message are you hoping to promote?
I’m so glad you asked. My inspiration for “El Beso” was actually my best friend Lugo. While everyone on my team was busy with other projects, movies, soundtracks, production etc… Lugo had mentioned to me “Why don’t you do a track?” I sat silent for a moment then responded “And Sing what, I can’t sing?” without missing a beat he responded “You have a great voice” and that was it. Later that night his question kept repeating in my head. And month’s prior Star Hanson had mentioned to me about doing a track, we spoke about it for weeks. So, I took Lugo’s question as confirmation and decided to do it. I described to him what I wanted to do and what I wanted my track to sound like, but it took months before anything materialized. Then one day we were on the phone and I said, “Lugo, that’s it!” he was scared and said “What?” lmao. I said to him, “That track you’re working on is what I want my song to sound like, can I have it?” He paused for a moment then said, “OK”. Chuck “The Voice” Robert’s then came into the picture and I truly believe god sent him to be a part of the family and here we are.
As far as the message, never give up on your dreams. What is meant to be for you will be and nothing can stop that. God will send complete strangers into your life and help you make the connection to put you on the right track.
Where do you hope to be on 5 years?
In less than 5 years I hope to be Happy, healthy and prosperous.
