The ball is back in Drakeâs court. After Kendrick Lamarâs back-to-back diss tracks, âEuphoriaâ and â6:16 in LA,â the For All the Dogs rapper has taken verbal shots at his nemesis with the new song âFamily Matters.â Listen to it below.
On âFamily Matters,â Drake responds to some of Lamarâs âEuphoriaâ lyrics. For instance, Lamar questioned Drakeâs quality as a father, and Drake answers, âYou mentioned my seed, now deal with his dad/I gotta go bad, I gotta go bad.â He also taunts Lamar with name-drops of some of his closest collaborators, Dave Free, Anthony âTop Dawgâ Tiffith, and Baby Keem (âK.Dot shit is only hitting hard when Baby Keem put his pen to itâ).
Beyond Lamar, Drake calls out some of the other hip-hop figures whoâve taken him to task in recent weeks. He has bars for Metro Boomin (âLeland Wayne, he a fuckinâ lame, so I know he had to be an influenceâ), Future (âPluto shit make me sick to my stomach/We ainât never really been through itâ), and Rick Ross (âRoss callinâ me the white boy, and the shit kinda got a ring to it/âCause all these rappers wavinâ white flags while the whole fuckinâ club sing to itâ).
Drake also addresses the legal aftermath of his âTaylor Made Freestyle.â The track, which has been removed from the Canadian musicianâs social media pages, was the subject of a cease-and-desist letter from 2Pacâs estate, due to the songâs use of artificial intelligence to emulate the late California rapperâs vocals. On his new track, Drake raps, âA cease-and-desist is for hoes/Canât listen to lies that come out of your mouth/You called the 2Pac Estate/And begged âem to sue me and get that shit down.â
One of Drakeâs most personal attacks against Lamar comes toward the songâs end when he seems to allege that the Compton artist has domestically abused a partner. âThey hired a crisis management team/To clean up the fact that you beat on your queen,â he raps, âThe picture you painted ainât what it seems.â (Beyond Drakeâs lines, Kendrick Lamar has not faced public accusations of domestic violence.)
âFamily Mattersâ is Drakeâs third anti-Lamar song of the spring, following âPush Upsâ and âTaylor Made Freestyle.â Heâs been newly upset with Lamar (and Future and Metro Boomin) since the We Donât Trust You song âLike That.â
