The international audience at the Canneseries television festival was the first worldwide to take a deep dive into Amazon’s Fallout, the hotly anticipated adaptation of the blockbuster video game franchise.

The first two episodes of the series screened Saturday night in Cannes, just under a week before the show rolls out worldwide on Prime Video.

Fallout is set 200 years after a 1950s nuclear apocalypse wiped out modern civilization. Ella Purnell stars as Lucy, an idealistic young woman born underground in a luxury fallout shelter, who knows nothing of the wasteland above. But when people hurt her loved ones, Lucy is forced to leave her vault and fight her way through the real world above.

Purnell attended the Cannes premiere alongside director Jonathan Nolan (Westworld), Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Lucy’s vault dweller father Hank, and Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, a young soldier in the Brotherhood of Steel, a high-tech religious order who believe it is their mission to bring law and order back to the wasteland. Showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner created the series.

Ahead of the premiere, Purnell received the Canneseries rising star award. The British-born actress had her small screen breakout as the teen version of Jackie in Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Accepting the award, Purnell thanked pretty much everyone involved in Fallout, including all of her co-stars and “everyone at Amazon. There are so many of you.”

The Cannes audience gave the series a warm reception, responding to the show’s arch humor, 1950s retro style and occasional OTT violence, elements faithfully adapted from the video game.

Fallout premieres on Prime Video on April 11.
