Richard Webber deserves to be happy, and it doesn’t look like it’s ever going to happen.

At least, not if Shonda Rhimes has anything to say about it.

The promo for next week’s episode suggests that, for the third time, Richard may be facing the loss of the woman he loves. Let’s get into our Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 3 spoilers.

Once, Twice, Three Times a Widower?

What’s worse than watching a beloved character receive devastating news that could change his life?

Well, it looks like Meredith will have to be the one to break it to Richard that Catherine’s life is hanging in the balance.

The titular character is apparently going to have a crisis of conscience about whether she should even tell him.

You know, because Catherine blackmailed her into keeping her mouth shut.

The look on Meredith’s face when she’s standing with her back to Richard is so familiar, by the way.

Back on Grey’s Anatomy Season 7 Episode 19, she wore that same tortured expression.

That’s right.

I guess the decision of whether to tell Richard that Catherine is on death’s doorstep is difficult. Just as difficult as deciding whether to tamper with Derek’s Alzheimer’s trial to ensure Adele got the experimental drug and not the placebo.

No one can argue that Dr. Grey doesn’t have a conscience, at least.

I can’t imagine a world in which she doesn’t spill the beans.

Richard is the closest thing Meredith has to a father. For her, leaving him in the dark about this would tear her apart.

Of course, if Catherine survives, she might go scorched earth when she finds out Richard knows the truth.

The question is, will she re-fire Meredith, or just send her lawyers after her?

Of course, we’re operating under the assumption that Catherine doesn’t kick the bucket in the upcoming episode.

It may be hard to believe the writers would kill off the face of the Fox Foundation. But if we’re being realistic, it wouldn’t be the most far-fetched Grey’s Anatomy storyline in history.

At this point, I’m not sure if anyone is still attached to the character.

Catherine has been awfully venomous lately, and not even a near-death experience can justify her behavior and treatment of others.

What’s Going on in the Operating Room?

Nick is back in Seattle for some reason. Does anyone ever know what’s going on with this guy? (Better question: do we care?)

It’s par for the Grey Sloan course that a doctor who no longer works there is performing surgery anyway.

There’s no word on why exactly Nick is the only available surgeon to operate on this patient, but he’s joined in the O.R. by Webber, Griffith, and Adams.

(Also, Bokhee is there! It’s always so good to see her; she’s one of the best Grey’s Anatomy characters of all time.)

For reasons unknown, the patient can’t be under general anesthesia. With that in mind, this has the potential to be a pretty exciting surgery.

Awake operations are rare, though we’ve seen a few on this show, and with them comes a long list of extra complications.

I’m willing to bet that this surgery will be a big deal, and not just because the patient is fully conscious.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 3 Spoilers: Relationship Drama for Everyone

Plus, how will Griffith and Adams handle working together now that their relationship is on again?

And speaking of their relationship, we need to talk about the conversation they had during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 2.

For a moment, it looked like Simone was going to force a serious conversation about the realities of a resident dating an intern.

As anxious as Lucas is about having to repeat his intern year, he made it clear that the situation had nothing to do with Simone.

It was a pretty mature response, and he’s right — his career shouldn’t be impacted by who he’s dating. But that doesn’t mean that Simone’s concerns aren’t valid.

Let’s be honest.

This is Grey’s Anatomy, so there have been countless examples of relationships between superiors and subordinates.

Frankly, the human resources department at Grey Sloan is probably exhausted.

Obviously, there have been times when those ethically questionable hookups have worked out, leading to happiness for everyone involved.

But more often than not, the power imbalance at work leads to complications at home.

Simone is right to want to address that potential issue before it festers into something neither of them can handle.

Speaking of relationships, Mika and Jules have now spent some quality time canoodling. Sadly, as we know, their budding romance is doomed.

With Midori Francis making her Grey’s Anatomy exit at some point this season, we can’t help but be disappointed that this particular ship has sunk before it could sail.

And we can’t forget about Blue, whose heat with the ex-fiancee who doesn’t remember him is starting to sizzle.

I’m currently struggling a little to feel invested in that storyline, but maybe the coming weeks will turn that around.

Some fans noticed chemistry between Levi and the new hospital chaplain last week, too. Perhaps we’ll see some development between the two of them.

When Will These Characters Be Back?

Heading into next week, I’m hoping to see more of Bailey and Warren.

Now that Station 19 is officially behind us, Ben is supposed to be applying to re-enter Grey Sloan’s residency program. Jason George is holding onto that Shondaland job security!

If we’re lucky, he’ll bring Stefania Spampinato back with him in the form of the pregnant Dr. Carina DeLuca.

I’d also love to see Danielle Savre (who played Carina’s wife, Maya, on Station 19) make at least a few appearances, giving us a miniature firehouse reunion.

With Jo and Link also expecting a baby, Carina’s services could very well be needed over at the hospital.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll keep saying it until someone proves me wrong: there’s no chance Jo’s pregnancy will go off without a hitch. That’s just not how things work on this show.

So, there’s plenty of opportunity for Carina (and maybe even Addison?) to seamlessly return to Grey’s Anatomy.

Next week’s episode is clearly going to be packed with drama and maybe even a shocking development or two, so be sure to tune in to ABC on Thursday at 10/9c to see what happens next.

Let me know in the comments what you think is coming; I love hearing your theories!
