Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito had a mini Twins reunion for State Farm’s Super Bowl commercial. However, the former co-stars were meant to reunite sooner in the nixed Twins sequel, Triplets

Following the viral ad’s release, Josh Gad, who had originally been tapped by director Ivan Reitman to co-write the movie with former writing partner Ryan Dixon, decided to give a preview of the script the two of them penned on Wednesday.

He wrote, “One of my favorite commercials from this past weekend’s SB was the reunion of Arnold and Danny for State Farm. Years ago, the late/great Ivan Reitman hired me and my then writing partner @dixonofnoho to write a sequel to Twins called Triplets meant to star Arnold, Danny and Eddie Murphy.  It was such a blast developing a follow up to one of my favorite comedies of the 80’s.”

Gad’s statement continued, “Unfortunately, the movie never got made but the memories of working on it remain beyond wonderful. Here now, to celebrate their reunion, is the insane prologue to that would be movie: Triplets.”

In the sequel, set in 2008, DeVito’s character Vincent’s bad investments, made “against Julius’ (Schwarzenegger) wishes, bankrupted their company.” Meanwhile, Julius copes with the death of his wife Marnie by dedicating his life to helping out in third world countries, “bringing justice to where there was none before.” But the siblings are brought together again when the receive a call informing them that a triplet has been found.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in May, Schwarzenegger claimed that after the director died, his son Jason decided to put the project on hold.
