Lil Nas X will have his assault charges dropped provided he completes a mental health program, a judge has decided.

The rapper appeared in court last month over an incident last August when he was reported as being spotted walking down the street in his underwear in Studio City in the early hours.

The Los Angeles Police Department were called out at the time, and when officers attempted to approach him, the rapper allegedly charged at them. Following his arrest, his bail was set at £75,000 (£55,460), and he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In court again yesterday (Monday April 6), a court decided that the artist, real name Montero Lamar Hill, can avoid a conviction provided that he completes a mental health treatment program.

When Hill was arrested, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and voluntarily entered a mental health treatment program that lasted two months, according to Rolling Stone.

A judge has now said that if he sticks with the treatment, obeys the law, and does not possess any weapons or threaten violence for two years, the three charges of police battery and a resisting arrest charge will be dropped.

He was previously facing up to five years in prison if convicted.

Following last year’s arrest, the rapper shared an update with fans at the time, saying he was physically and mentally OK but still shaken by the whole ordeal, which he said was “terrifying”.

His father Robert Stafford also said the intense pressure of the music industry, coupled with being a provider for his family and his mother’s reported struggles with addiction, contributed to his son’s “breakdown”.

After appearing in court for the first time last month, the rapper shared a statement with fans thanking them for their support during the tumultuous time. “All I wanted to say is to my fans, I really love, and I miss you, and I appreciate your support so much, and I can’t wait to be back hugging you guys,” he said after the court appearance.
