Ryan Reynolds on Why His Marriage to Blake Lively Is Still Solid After 9 Years

LifeStyle

Next year, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary. But nine years in, Reynolds was candid with Entertainment Tonight when the outlet asked what the secret to their strong marriage is.

“We don’t take each other too seriously, but we’re also friends,” Reynolds said. “Falling in love is great, but do you like each other? That’s kinda the question you gotta ask yourself, you know, going into it.” With Lively, “We’ve always liked each other,” he added. “We grow together. We learn from each other. So yeah, I’m lucky to have a buddy in that.”

Lively and Reynolds were married in 2012. They now have three daughters together, James, 6; Inez, 5; and Betty, 2.

Reynolds also opened up to Access Hollywood this week while promoting Red Notice about how he was afraid their third child, born in October 2019, would be a son.

I would not have it any other way,” he said of having all girls, via People. “When we had our youngest, I was quietly terrified it was gonna be a boy because I didn’t know, we didn’t know. I didn’t know anything but girls. I grew up with boys and I was constantly being thrown through walls when there was a perfectly good door five feet away.”

Reynolds praised Lively in his Mother’s Day tribute to her earlier this year—while still showing his sense of humor.

“It can’t be said enough… you’re the heart and soul of every moment this family shares,” he wrote to her. “I’m grateful for the light and for the kindness you smuggle into each and every second of our lives. I see you in the eyes of our children… Every laugh. Every blink and every thoughtful moment of vulnerability. The tender grit it takes to be a mother in 2021 is an act of pure strength and heroism. Never could I have predicted anonymous airport bathroom sex would lead to this. Or how you’d hire Dog The Bounty Hunter to find me. Either way, I’m lucky to reflect a little of the sunlight you shine on all of us. Happy Mother’s Day, my love.”
