Refresh for latest…: There’s a lot to unpack this weekend at the international box office, including a flying start for Warner Bros/New Line’s The Nun II, Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan continuing to outdo himself and a major milestone afoot for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Meanwhile, Barbie has danced past $1.4B worldwide.
Let’s start with the newest studio entry, The Nun II, which came in ahead of expectations with an $85.3M worldwide launch. Of that, $52.7M is from 69 international box office markets. The overseas start makes this the 2nd biggest opening for the Conjuring Universe, behind only The Nun in like-for-like markets and using today’s exchange rates. On a similar basis, the bow is 195% bigger than M3GAN and 200% above Evil Dead Rise.
Horror-leaning Latin America was the leader regionally, with a 68% share and ranking No. 1 in all markets. The results are roughly on par with Annabelle: Creation, 87% over Insidious: The Red Door and 106% above Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Southern Europe also performed strongly.
Mexico is the top play on the Michael Chaves-directed installment at $8.9M with the biggest opening for a horror film post-pandemic. Indonesia gave the sequel a No. 1 start with $4.4M and 91% of the Hollywood market share; it’s the 3rd biggest opening for a Conjuring Universe title there. Brazil likewise bowed to $4.4M, taking 60% share of the Top 5 films for the weekend and landing as the 2nd best Conjuring start. Italy, which is really perking up, grossed $3.3M to easily score the best launch for the franchise, topping The Nun by 22%. And Spain gave The Nun II a clear No. 1, coming in below only The Nun with $2.3M to beat all other comps.
In IMAX, the global weekend was $4M.
The Nun II was the global winner this session, though overseas Shah Rukh Khan’s latest, Jawan, is estimated to have come in higher with $57M, per Deadline sources. The action thriller started breaking records at release on Thursday, and, worldwide, the estimate for the action thriller is 535 crore ($64.4M) through today. That would give it the biggest four-day global debut ever for a Hindi movie. It’s also the highest-ever launch for a Bollywood title in India, at an estimated 350 crore ($42M) to top Khan’s own Pathaan which released last January. Pathaan’s earlier record was achieved across five days, making Jawan’s four-day start even more impressive. (Note that India remains a complicated market to track and we will be updating accordingly.)
From Red Chillies Entertainment, the film also gave IMAX its 2nd best global opening weekend ever for an Indian title with $2.4M. In India, Jawan earned $820K from only 26 screens, for IMAX’s 2nd best launch weekend ever in the market for an Indian title and 5th best for any movie.
Meanwhile, nearing a massive milestone, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is set to cross the $900M mark globally this week. Through Sunday, the Universal title is at $891M worldwide, including $576M from overseas. The Cillian Murphy-starrer added $19.5M (-51%) this 8th session in 83 markets.
Excluding China, the offshore cume through Sunday is above The Dark Knight Rises and Inception and more than double Dunkirk, Interstellar and Tenet in the same markets at the same point.
China’s second frame added $9.6M for a running total through Sunday of $46.8M, surpassing the lifetimes of The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk after only 12 days in release. The film dropped 55% from its strong opening, a better hold than for Dunkirk and Tenet as well as most other recent Hollywood entries. On Saturday, Oppenheimer ranked No.2 as new local films entered the market, but only Dust to Dust ranked ahead of it for the day.
The Top 5 markets to date are the UK ($72M), Germany ($46.9M), China ($46.8M), France ($40.1M) and Australia ($26M). The IMAX cume is now $176M global.
In another milestone, Sony/Escape Artists’ The Equalizer 3 topped the $100M global mark in its second outing, with a worldwide cume of $107.7M including $45.8M from offshore. The Denzel Washington threequel added $11.5M this frame in 50 markets with Brazil, Japan and Mexico still ahead in October.
The Top 5 to date are the UK ($5.9M), France ($4.4M), Germany ($4.2M), Australia ($4M) and Spain ($3.2M).
Finally, the year’s biggest film to date, Warner Bros’ Barbie, added $5.5M in the 8th frame from 73 markets for an overseas cume of $782.2M and a global tally of $1.403B.
Top 5 to date overseas are: UK ($120.8M), Germany ($56.5M), Australia ($55.6M), Mexico ($54.3M) and France ($47.6M).
And here’s a little refresher on some of the records for Greta Gerwig’s living doll: WB’s biggest grossing movie of all time globally; biggest industry film of 2023; 3rd biggest WB movie ever internationally; top WB title ever in 40 markets including the UK, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Poland.
In local play, Dust to Dust, a gangster film from director Jonathan Li, led the China chart with an estimated $22M bow. In Korea, Jason Yu’s mystery Sleep was No. 1 with $4M per Kobiz.
