Former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has shared footage of him playing some of the band’s tracks for the first time since leaving the line-up. Check it out below.
The percussionist broke out the covers while at a clinic in Paris last October, and it marks the first time he has been seen playing any music from the iconic Iowa band since his abrupt departure in 2023.
Held at Le Trianon on October 27, pro-shot footage shows Weinberg playing two songs from the 2019 album he worked on with them ‘We Are Not Your Kind’, these were ‘Spiders’ and ‘Solway Firth’.
He joined the group in 2014, replacing late founding member Joey Jordison, and went on to record three albums with Slipknot: 2014’s ‘.5: The Grey Chapter’, 2019’s ‘We Are Not Your Kind’ and 2022’s ‘The End, So Far’. He was sacked from the Iowan metal outfit in November 2023 and has since gone on join legendary punk group Suicidal Tendencies.
Just months before he performed the two Slipknot tracks in Paris, Weinberg In J appeared on a podcast and shared that he was “not quite yet really ready” to talk about being fired from the group.
In late 2023 – when the Iowa band announced his departure – the drummer also said he was “heartbroken and blindsided” by the news, and added that despite his sadness at the decision, he “wouldn’t trade for the world” his “memories and experiences” with them.
In an interview with NME shortly after the announcement, Shawn “Clown” Crahan spoke about the line-up change and said: “We’ve moved away from things that don’t belong and we are continuously moving away from what is in the way. There are no hard feelings. There’s no anger or hate.”
He continued: “As far as Jay goes, what people need to know is Jay did not leave the band, and what I want to say is that we’re moving on… This space that we’re at right now is a very, very special space, thought about and generated mostly by the OGs [longstanding members Corey Taylor, Mick Thomson, Sid Wilson and Jim Root].”
As well as joining forces with Suicidal Tendencies, Weinberg also revealed earlier this month that he is working on a solo project.
As for Slipknot, the band recently wrapped up touring for 2024 in London, where they performed rarities from their celebrated self-titled debut album. Former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande is now acting as the band’s percussionist, and the group will resume touring Europe in June. Visit here for tickets.
