Why Kate Spade New York’s Dakota Is My New Everyday Bag

LifeStyle

kate spade new york is a handbag icon. Among others, the brand is responsible for the Sam, which launched in 1993 and became an immediate classic.

Despite having the utmost admiration for the timeless silhouettes and quality of kate spade new york’s bags, I’ve never invested in one—with the exception of the I Love NY Manhattan tote, which I use strictly for travel. When I heard about the launch of the well-sized Dakota bag, which flaunts a laid-back approach to classic silhouettes, I knew I had to don one. It comes in four colors, including a textured croc style in emerald green.

Defined by its clean, geometrical lines and punchy colorways, the updated clasp is a true standout IMO. At first glance, I thought that the new brand marker was simply an impactful design, which I liked. But I was absolutely sold when I realized that it was an artful expression of the brand’s K and S. Another key detail that caught my eye was the use of yellow-gold hardware. It has a heavier feel to show its high quality, and the designer plaque underneath the front clasp is a nice finishing touch.

The bag is quite practical. And it’s surprisingly spacious for such a compact design. There’s a well-organized interior with a zip pouch pocket that’s perfectly sized for smaller essentials like credit cards and your ID.

When it comes to wearability, the Dakota comes with detachable straps that can be adjusted to a desired length and styled in multiple different ways. It can be slung over the shoulder by the chain-link handle or worn crossbody for a hands-free option. I became particularly partial to removing the straps altogether and carrying it in-hand as a clutch for a solid day-to-night situation.

The leather is of the highest quality, and with the application of the brand’s leather conditioner to soften and smoothen any imperfections that may come from natural wear and tear, it will keep looking great for years.

The price point is reasonable for a luxury bag, and it’s well worth the cost per wear given all the different ways one can carry it. Truly a win-win.
