What To Know

  • CNN’s Maggie Haberman expressed shock at Trump’s refusal to confirm whether U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s job is secure.
  • Trump criticized Pirro for “choking” and “folding like an umbrella” in collapsed Reflecting Pool vandalism case.
  • Haberman noted that Trump appeared visibly angry with Pirro.

CNN political analyst Maggie Haberman said she was “shocked” by President Donald Trump‘s response to a question about interim U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and whether her job is “safe.”

The question Haberman was referring to came on Wednesday (August 6) outside Air Force One. A reporter asked the president if Pirro’s role as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia is “safe” following the drama surrounding the collapsed case against former Olympian David Hearn.

Last Friday (July 31), Pirro was moved to drop the charges against Hearn, the man federal prosecutors had accused of damaging the National Mall’s recently renovated Reflecting Pool. In a 20-page court filing, Pirro wrote, “The damage was the result of a botched installation and not vandalism.”

During an Oval Office press conference earlier this week, Trump said that Pirro “choked” and “folded like an umbrella,” though he refused to say whether he was reconsidering her role.

However, when asked on Wednesday whether Pirro’s job was safe, the president responded, “Uh, I haven’t made a determination.”

Speaking to Haberman on Thursday’s edition of The Source, host Kaitlan Collins said, “When you hear what’s going on with Jeanine Pirro and the president refused to tell y’all the other night, he basically said he doesn’t know if he’s gonna fire her or not. And to hear him answer that way was pretty remarkable.”

“It was shocking,” Haberman replied. “He looked visibly angry. And granted, it was nighttime and it was under a giant plane wing. And he spoke to us for, I think, a total of eight minutes on this trip. That was all the press got with him. But he was clearly very angry.”

Collins asked to clarify if Trump was angry “with [Pirro]?”

“With her,” Haberman answered. “He tried to walk it back a little bit today… but it doesn’t really matter. It’s in the air, and it’s known what happened.”
