With four Jeopardy! wins under his belt, Peter McFerrin has already qualified for the Tournament of Champions, but if he wins game five, he is guaranteed a spot in the tournament. Four-game winners only advance if there are not enough five-game winners.
McFerrin, from Corona, California, has a four-day total of $96,997. On June 5, the energy industry professional played against Seth McElroy, from Charlottesville, Virginia, and Jackie Goncalves, from Brooklyn, New York. Warning: Spoilers for the June 5 episode of Jeopardy! ahead!
At the beginning of the episode, host Ken Jennings shared that McFerrin wants to use his winnings to donate to local cat shelters, pay off some debt, and buy a car for his teenage daughter. By the end of the first 15 clues, McFerrin had the lead with $6,400.
McElroy, a registered nurse, found the Daily Double on clue 21. He was in second place with $2,400 and wagered all of his money.
In “That’s Egregious,” the clue read, “Unbearable, like the acts that in part asked for restitution for the Boston Tea Party.” “What are the Stamp Acts?” he answered incorrectly. This dropped him down to $0. The correct response was the Intolerable Acts.
At the end of the round, McFerrin had the lead with $7,800. Goncalves, an art department coordinator, was in second place with $2,800. McElroy had $400.
In Double Jeopardy, McElroy found the first DD of the round on clue one. He could wager up to $2,000, and that’s exactly what he did.
The clue in “World Cities” was “This Middle Eastern city, alphabetically first in national capitals, was once a pearl-fishing port.” “What is Amman?” he answered. The correct response was Abu Dhabi, so he fell to -$1,600.
When McElroy found the third DD on clue 17, he had $3,600. He wagered $2,000 in “Coining Some Words.”
The clue read, “On a 1995 German coin, this man’s name appears above a big ‘X’ & 2 images of a hand, one showing just the bone.” “Who is… Pius?” he responded. The correct answer was Röntgen. He dropped to $1,600.
McFerrin had a runaway win with $23,000 by the end of the round. Goncalves had $9,600. McElroy was in third place with $4,400.
“Military History” was the category for Final Jeopardy. The clue was “At the U.S. Naval Academy, a 19th c. memorial inscribed ‘Commerce laments their fall’ honors heroes of this conflict.” None of the game show contestants correctly answered the Barbary Wars (Tripolitan War).
McElroy’s answer was “What are the?” He wagered $47, giving him $4,353. Goncalves’ response was “What is literally IDK, Ken?” She wagered $600, making her final total $9,000.
McFerrin answered, “What is the War of 1812?” He wagered $3,799, dropping him to $19,201. That was still enough to give him the win. McFerrin had a five-day total of $116,198, advanced to the ToC, and will play his sixth game on Monday.
