About The Mutaytor:

Spectacles of Sound & Vision

We are artists, musicians, and technicians dedicated to bringing you spectacles of sound and vision from beyond imagination. To inspire and empower our audience, our community, and our selves to reach beyond what we are to what we can be. We convert civilians into RockStars!

Born in the Black Rock Desert at the Burning Man Arts Festival in the early 2000s, The Mutaytor quickly became legendary for creating one of the most bombastic and unique visceral experiences in modern entertainment. The band developed a massive spectacle that seamlessly merged a modern analog and electronic dance orchestra – complete with horn section, multiple percussionists, guitars, bass, keyboards, synths and machines – with physical performance artists, giant pyrotechnics, massive tesla coils, death-defying aerial and trapeze performances, fire spinning, breathtaking Bollywood – style dance numbers, and giant screen visuals. Their sound was an evolved blend of progressive, electronic-influenced psychedelic funk and art rock that became the soundtrack to a seminal period in the emergent West Coast underground festival scene.

As they spread out to perform huge festivals across the country, adding John Avila of Oingo Boingo on bass, The Mutaytor sold out prestige venues everywhere they went – their poster for a final sold-out show still adorns the wall at the Fillmore in SF. They even played a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden for The Jammy Awards, collaborating with the legendary Richie Havens and an all-star band featuring members of the Grateful Dead.

Over their decade-long career, The Mutaytor garnered a massive, rabid following that evolved into an entire extended community, where the audience – often elaborately costumed – became as integral to the show as the band itself. Each event breached the wall between the entertainers and the entertained, creating rapid-fire futuristic vaudevillian theatre where the vibe was ecstatic, friendly, and wildly inclusive. The shows were explosions of immersive, vivid art, both on and off the stage.

The band recorded five critically acclaimed albums, including “Yelling Theatre in a Crowded Fire” and their final opus, “Unconditional Love – The Westerfeld Sessions.” Their career paved the way for a whole generation of artists that followed, cementing their place as pioneers of a movement that transformed underground festival culture.
