After Sara Haines was unexpectedly absent from Wednesday’s (September 16) episode of The View, the cohosts did not explain the reason for her absence except for Joy Behar to note, “She’s not sick.” So, when Haines returned on Thursday’s (September 17) show, she decided to address it at the top of the hour.

A tearful Haines explained the very personal reason she had to take the day off. “I wanted to share why I was missing yesterday. My father-in-law passed away,” she said. “He’s been in hospice for a week, so we knew it was coming. But I think the second that landed, it kind of allowed a load you’re carrying for so long to just … gush out.”

Haines continued to detail how her husband, Max Shifrin, has been handling the matter, saying, “Max has been gone; he hasn’t seen the kids, and now he’s finally back. And we’re pouring love into him. But it was the most important person in Max’s life, and I think I learned about this man on my first date because it was everything… It was Max’s North Star, so it’s the chapter we’re in, and we all will be a part of this club eventually. But wow, it’s brutal.”

Haines then noted she wanted to “quell any rumors going around” about her sudden disapppearance. “I found out right before the show yesterday,” she explained.

She then noted, “Because Joy, you’re like the queen of, ‘Well, she’s not sick, but she’s somewhere.’ Yeah, you made it sound scandalous. You made it sound so interesting. I almost didn’t want to ruin it with the truth.”

I didn’t want people to think that you were sick,” Behar then explained.

“Oh, no, no, yeah. I mean, heart sick, head sick, but not [regular sick].” Haines said.

After Behar attempted to defend herself, saying, “You try to do something good, and that’s what you get,” Haines clarified, “Joy, I can use the levity right now. So, keep that coming, girl.”

Immediately after, the real “Hot Topics” began, and Haines jumped right into the fray.
