It’s Been a Year. It’s Time for Boston Blue to Stand on Its Own

Television

Boston Blue’s first season was strong, and I’m grateful it was renewed — and that Blue Bloods’ Jamie is going to visit.

I love Jamie best of all the Reagans, and I appreciate episodes where the Blue Bloods characters visit.

Still, as Boston Blue heads into its sophomore season, I hope it cuts most of its ties with Blue Bloods and stands on its own.

Some Blue Bloods Fans Will NEVER Accept Boston Blue, So Why Try To Court Them?

Although it’ll be two years in December since Blue Bloods‘ final episode, some fans are still furious that it was canceled — and they tend to take their anger out on the sequel.

Some of these fans hate Boston Blue, regardless of whether they’ve ever watched it.

They feel it’s a cheap imitation that doesn’t deserve airtime.

That’s why Boston Blue Season 2 should downplay its connection to Blue Bloods.

The more it tries to remind the audience that Danny spent 14 years on another show, the more riled up Blue Bloods fans might become.

Instead, Boston Blue should lean into its own strengths.

It is telling its own story about Danny being a fish out of water in Boston, his relationship with the Silvers, and their own experience as a blended Black/Jewish family of cops.

Sure, once in a while there can be a cameo appearance. It’s always fun when the other Reagans show up.

But the main focus should be on Danny and Lena and on the other Silvers, without trying to be Blue Bloods 2.0.

Boston Blue Season 1 Did An Okay Job Of This — Now Build On It

During Boston Blue Season 1, Danny talked about his family a lot, although visits were few and far between.

The discussions of the Reagans were never gratuitous. They felt like they fit into the conversations Danny was having, though they also reminded us of where he came from.

Between visits, the series focused on current cases and the Silver family’s issues, as it should.

Yet at the same time, it felt like the writers were trying too hard to make it feel like a continuation of Blue Bloods.

Frank’s influence extended to Boston, where Danny often ran into people who knew his name.

Sometimes Danny compared his family traditions to the Silvers, and he and Sean often talked about what Frank or Henry would think of what they were doing.

I had mixed feelings about these conversations.

As a devoted Blue Bloods fan, I enjoyed the references, but sometimes it felt like there was too much of a connection, distracting from the main stories.

I Wish Boston Blue Would Lean Into The Fish-Out-of-Water Idea Harder

When Boston Blue first began, Danny found life awkward.

He’d lost the safety net that the Reagans provided, didn’t know how things worked in Boston, and had to prove himself.

That was one of the most fascinating aspects of the new series, and my hope for Boston Blue Season 2 is that it leans harder into it.

At this point, Danny’s been there for a while, so he isn’t completely a fish out of water.

But the Boston PD could still have a different culture than the New York PD, and Danny could still have all sorts of feelings about his Reagan name not carrying as much weight there as it used to in New York.

Baez is supposed to return, and Sean is there, but that doesn’t mean that Danny should feel completely at home.

I’d especially like more friction between him and Sean over Danny having essentially followed him to Boston.

That’s flared up at times but hasn’t really been addressed. Let’s actually go there.
