Don’t expect Luke Grimes to tune into CBS at 8/7c on Sundays. The Yellowstone alum, currently leading Season 2 of the spinoff series Marshals on CBS’ Sunday-night lineup, doesn’t like to see his work on screen.
“I don’t enjoy watching myself,” he told People as he and his costars celebrated Marshals Season 2 premiere at the Raiders–Chiefs football game at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium last weekend.
But, as Grime explained, his rationale for tuning out is a creative one. “I don’t know that it’s very helpful for me to watch myself, he said. “In fact, I think it, it might actually hurt my process a little bit. I wouldn’t say I’m a method actor — whatever that term means these days. I have a method, and that method can change from job to job. Sometimes I find things necessary to find a character, and that same thing might not work on the next job.”

In fact, Grimes said he has “a very specific way” he has approached playing Navy SEAL-turned-rancher-turned-U.S. Marshal Kayce Dutton, a role he first took on in Yellowstone’s 2018 premiere. “I’ve been doing it so long now that it takes a little less work to get there at this point,” he said.
For a similar reason, Grimes hasn’t watched his TV family members Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) in the other current Yellowstone spinoff, the Paramount+ drama Dutton Ranch.
“I almost felt like watching [Dutton Ranch] while I was shooting [Marshals] might kind of paint and color in my brain that I don’t need right now,” Grimes previously told TV Insider. “We’re doing such a different show, and they’re trying to do a continuation of Yellowstone, where Marshals is a different format, a different pace, a different tone. It’s obviously got a procedural element, and so [I’m] trying to really, really stick with what we’re doing over here. I will definitely watch Dutton Ranch at some point.”
In Marshals, Grimes’ Kayce Dutton combines his a cowboy SEAL skills to “bring range justice to Montana,” as CBS says in a logline. He and teammates Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) must “balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families,” including Kayce’s son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), and his Broken Rock reservation confidantes, Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham).
