In theaters on October 2nd is ‘Verity,’ the latest movie adapted from the work of prolific romance author Colleen Hoover. This title, however, skews further into dark psychosexual tension and twisty mystery than even ‘It Ends with Us.’
The cast for the film includes Anne Hathaway (‘Les Misérables,’) Josh Hartnett (‘Lucky Number Slevin’), Dakota Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey’), Ismael Cruz Cordova (‘In the Blood’) and Asel Swango (‘Power Book II: Ghost’).

Initial Thoughts
While cinemagoers might be taken a little aback and the darker and twistier themes of ‘Verity,’ fans of her books will know this one as the odd one out, albeit still with lashings of romantic drama and a central heroine on a journey.
Script and Direction
Adapted by Nick Antosca (‘The Act’), ‘Verity’ follows a lot of familiar patterns in its central mystery. It’s decent, even if it’s rarely spectacular or all that memorable.
As director, Michael Showalter (‘The Big Sick’) proves he’s a more than capable genre-hopper, but despite its subject matter, this one lacks the passion of other work.
Cast and Performances
Johnson and Hartnett don’t exactly burn with chemistry, but they do get the job done as nervy writer Lowen and architect Jeremy, still putting the pieces back together after the loss of one of his children in a boating incident and his wife’s near-comatose status following a car crash.
Hathaway meanwhile (as the paralyzed wife), gives good menace in flashback scenes.
Final Thoughts
It’s unlikely to end up on many Best Of the Year lists, but if you’re looking for a sexy thriller with some plot turns (and you haven’t read the book already), ‘Verity’ could be what you’re after.
