Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 Episode 8 Expertly Doubles Back

There’s no doubt Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has had fun with world-jumping.

During the previous episode, we ended up with multiple groups all hopping through different worlds.

It brought up the question of whether Stuart trusts himself to do the job, and I felt sorry for the guy for a while.

Then Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 Episode 8 happened, and it changed my view of the whole situation.

Did Stuart send multiple groups, or is it possible that they all end up interconnecting with each themselves?

Getting the Wrong Machine

If you thought that Stuart picked up the wrong machine when dealing with the other group during Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 Episode 7, you would be right.

It doesn’t take long for Stuart to work that out.

However, unlike in previous installments, where he’s bought a new machine or found the item needed to get it running properly again — thanks to messages in bear manure — he decides they need to go world-hopping again.

So, we don’t end up sticking around in the centur-verse for too long.

Instead, we find out more about that universe where they’re all in fatigues.

Personally, I thought that was another group from another universe when we first saw it, so I’m glad the series wastes no time telling us what actually happened.

Now, I guess I still have questions about how many versions of himself Stuart visited—and why the Stuart who is visiting other versions isn’t doing anything himself—but I’m trying not to get too bogged down in the sci-fi of it all.

As I’ve said, that’s giving me a headache.

I just want to enjoy Stuart Fails to Save the Universe for the absolutely bonkers ride it is.

Stuart deciding they need to tweak the machine to reach the versions of them with the right machine shows he’s becoming more of a leader.

He’s trying to think on his feet, and he isn’t interested in taking the easy way out.

He also still has a habit of not thinking at all, as shown when he doesn’t take the machine to the trenches with him.

We see growth, but not so much that it feels unbelievable.

Eventually, it all works out. 

It leads to Firing Squad Penny getting herself stuck in the centur world, and I would like to revisit that, but it’s a great way to explain one group of Stuart and Friends with the device efficiently.

As all this was going on, I did find myself wondering what war they were in. What was this military world that they had landed in, and how had Penny become a major?

But then, we didn’t really get answers.

We know it’s — to paraphrase — the wrong country, with the wrong religion and the wrong family, but that’s it.

And it’s enough. Because, let’s face it, so many wars are started because people think they’re right and the other side is wrong.

Like with the sci-fi of it all, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe isn’t getting bogged down in details that don’t matter or add more, and I have to give them props for that.

Even if my ever-questioning mind wants to know more.

This Is Going to Be a Great Binge-Rewatch

Usually, I’m all for weekly releases. That’s how I prefer to watch a TV show, and I’ve certainly enjoyed getting new episodes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Season 1 each week.

However, I think this will also make a great binge-rewatch.

At first, I didn’t think I appreciated the worlds colliding, and I didn’t really consider the lessons each could learn from these parallel universes.

As we get close to the end of the season, I can see it more, and not just because of different groups of Stuart and Friends colliding.

Stuart has learned how to lead, while Bert and Kripke have learned to listen to him and follow his plans.

Denise has figured out what she wants in life, and it’s leading to something excitingly special for both her and Stuart later on.

Remember, I found Denise insufferable during the third episode of the series, and now she makes me smile when she’s talking about a future with Stuart.

I’m seeing it more as I rewatch episodes to remember events to prep for the next one. 

I think if I watched each episode back-to-back, I’d appreciate it so much more.

While I had a few issues with a couple of episodes at the beginning, I even like them more as we get into the final episodes of the season.

No, they’re not going to be my favorite ones, but they fit in with the rest of the world jumping nicely, and they create a basis for growth now that we have it.

At the same time, they work well on their own, offering the syndication benefits that other sitcoms have had over the years.

Sure, HBO Max probably isn’t going to syndicate these originals, but we can get a similar vibe by putting on any episode we want when we have 20 minutes to spare.

At the same time, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe offers that season-arc element. We get to see how the group tries to figure out the problem they’ve been handed.
