It doesn’t always hit, and negative reviews didn’t help in this case, but the horror genre once more proved a robust box office performer. Universal’s ‘Other Mommy,’ which stars Jessica Chastain, survived its critical reaction to open top of the charts with $27.5 million.
It pushed down last week’s champ ‘Verity’ to second place, with $11.48 million.
The other new arrival for the week, Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Social Reckoning,’ opened softer, landing fifth beneath expectations with $5.5 million.

For the most part, it was holdovers holding firm. ‘Resident Evil’ slipped a place to third and $8.36 million, while ‘Heart of the Beast’ was fourth on $7.1 million.
Elsewhere, ‘Angel and the Badman’ opened ninth with $2.06 million.
