The Today hosts are gearing up for the back-to-school season, but not before some last-minute summer fun.
Dylan Dreyer and Craig Melvin kicked off the third hour of Today‘s Monday, August 24, episode by talking about their weekend plans with Kaylee Hartung, who was filling in for Al Roker. “These last weekends before summer ends go quick,” Dreyer stated, while Melvin added, “It’s time for them to go back to school.”
Dreyer joked that her three sons — Calvin, Oliver, and Rusty — are “so attached” to her, stating, “My mom used to call me a leech when I was a kid, and I get it now. I can’t go anywhere without them right now.”
Dreyer showed a photo of herself and her kids, taken by her former Today colleague and current neighbor Hoda Kotb, as well as a video of her sons swimming. “There’s a dock, and the boys are jumping off the dock,” she explained. “So, I didn’t realize they were all going to flip off the dock.”
In the clip, Rusty lands on his back after doing his flip. “Then Calvin takes his turn,” Dreyer detailed. “His flip is a little not as graceful, but that’s what happens, I guess, when you’re kinda tall.”
The “highlight” of the video for Dreyer is when Rusty followed his older brothers and did his own flip. “I’m thinking, ‘He’s just gonna jump off. He’s wearing the swimmies,’ and I’m thinking, ‘He’s just gonna do, like, a regular jump.’ But no,” Dreyer told her co-hosts.
Hartung joked, “Monkey see, monkey,” while Melvin said Rusty nailed his flip. “10, I give him a 10,” Hartung added as the trio gave Rusty a round of applause, after which Melvin quipped, “If we tried something like that, we’d been feeling it for two weeks.”
Fans reacted to Dreyer’s fun parenting story on Today‘s Instagram page, with one person writing, “Only some of us are built to be 3 boy moms. Overcoming anxiety and harnessing the ability to respond at any moment. They’re never unattended, but we can’t always intervene.” Another added, “That’s classic third child behavior.”
Someone else shared, “I thought this was for sure gonna be a story about stitches!” A different person posted, “As a grandmother, I had a nervous breakdown worrying they were going to hit their heads!” A separate commenter stated, “Dylan (I believe) was made to be a boys Mom. She knows exactly how to take care of them there was nothing for her to learn she knew it, did it all, doing it all in perfection.”
Dreyer shares her kids with her estranged husband, Brian Fichera. In July 2025, Dreyer revealed via Instagram that the pair had quietly separated a few months prior. She officially filed for divorce back in March.
